Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday said his administration would go back to the people of the state on whether to return the monthly sanitation exercise.
Governor Sanwo-Olu said this during a visit to the Olusosun dump site in Ojota area of the state, in company with his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.
The State Government had in November 2016 canceled the monthly environmental sanitation exercise held every last Saturday of the month.
The government had said it was no longer appropriate to restrict the movement of people for three hours in a mega city like Lagos, at a time they should be pursuing commercial and entrepreneurial activities.
Sanwo-Olu, however, said there was the need to seek the opinion of Lagosians again on the issue.
“We are going to ask Lagosians if they want us to return the three- hour monthly sanitation to ensure we have a cleaner city.
“Though I know what my own views are, we will still need to ask Lagosians,” he said.
Lagos has in the recent past faced challenges of environmental sanitation, forcing the governor to sign an executive order on Thursday, a day after he was sworn in, to tackle the problem, among others.
According to Sanwo-Olu, 70 percent of refuse generated in Lagos is accommodated at the Olusosun dump site, and to create more jobs, the government will soon begin recycling the waste.
“Today, we came here to validate the executive order we signed. This is where we receive 70 percent of the waste in Lagos.
“The facility is 28 years old, so we want to ensure it can receive waste for the next 23 years.
“We want to see how we can improve the road condition, just so that the compactor trucks can have a quicker turn around time.
“The building we are constructing at the entrance of the site will be used to train and retrain the staff and create jobs for more people.
“Half of the waste that comes here need not be here, as they would have been recycled. Recycling is the way to go,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu said the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) would be collecting recyclable materials in order to create jobs.
“We came here to show people we are not armchair politicians. We are going to create jobs here for people who have nothing doing.

“There is money in waste if properly harnessed. We are going to take back the pride of Lagos,” he said.

A Nigerian man identified on Facebook as King Ezekiel Joseph Mayowa has committed suicide by drinking sniper after his girlfriend of 9 years abandoned him.
Mayowa during a live video on his Facebook page two nights ago in his room recorded himself crying while holding a bottle of a sniper.
According to what he said, he ‘lost his girlfriend’ when she went for NYSC. He says since his girlfriend got into the NYSC camp, she changed. He said the lady took advantage of a mistake that is 3 years old, as an advantage to break up with him.
He advised the Federal government to scrap NYSC and also advise ‘men’ to make money before dating any woman. He reiterated that he’s tried his best, but it looked as though his girlfriend wanted someone who is financially buoyant.
He said he had dated the said girl for 9 years, 3 months and 9 days. He also said he pleaded and pleaded with the said girl, but she refused. Mayowa who is a student of Lagos State Polytechnic apologized to his mother for treading this path.
He then made mention of some names, saying he’d miss them all. His body was found on Friday morning!

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released 4,536 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results which were earlier withheld for allegations of multiple infractions.
Sources report that over 1.8million candidates had sat for the unified examination between April 11 and April 18, but only 1,792,000 results were released on May 11.
On Friday, May 31, however, the examination body said it had cleared 4,536 out of 4,760 withheld results.
JAMB said the release followed the decision of a committee set up to examine the multiple facial identities.
The board said that the facial match recognition was carried out by its specialized software and Information Technology experts.
In a statement made available to sources by JAMB’s Head of Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, he added that the Nigerian Navy Secondary School center, Abeokuta, Ogun State, had been suspended for “acts not acceptable by the board.”

“Following the consideration of the committee on the 4,760 candidates whose results were withheld due to multiple facial matches with different names, the board has released the results of 4,536 absolved of complication.
“The board also released the results of 231 candidates who sat for the examination at the Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Abeokuta, Ogun State. However, the center has been suspended for acts not acceptable by the board.
Out of the number subjected for screening, the board will subject the results of 127 candidates for further physical examination while the results of 97 candidates established to have involved in infractions are withheld.
“Those to be subjected to further physical examination will be contacted. They must appear before an inspection team to clarify other likely areas of multiplicity. The 127 have been grouped in zones for convenience and easy accessibility.”

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu has called for the strengthening of inter-agency collaboration as an essential ingredient for the effective combat of corruption and terrorist financing in the country.

He made the call at the Inter-Agency Cooperation and Coordination Seminar, which held at the Army War College, Abuja, as part of the eight-month study program for 66 senior officers of the Nigerian Army.
“Synergy among agencies will no doubt go a long way in ensuring that our country is safe, and there is a need for more efforts in the investigation of where funds are gotten from,” he said.
Magu, who was represented by Chidi Chukwuka Boniface, a Director with the EFCC, further called on other agencies and bodies such as the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to curb the inflow of foreign currency.
“The Central Bank of Nigeria and other relevant agencies should be able to supervise these inflows and should find ways to track monies used in these insurgencies,” he said.
He further stressed the need for all agencies in the country to salvage the country from the grips of corruption, stressing that, “there is the need to fight corruption with total commitment and dedication as this is the only viable alternative available to us to move from where we are to a stable society”.
Director General, Services, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, James Akujobi, said inter-agency collaboration was essential to enhance joint efforts and cooperation among independent agencies with shared responsibilities and overlapping jurisdictions.
“Collaboration builds synergy and creates oneness to meet the common goals,” Akujobi said, noting that inter-agency collaboration also helps to address capability shortfalls,” he said.
Commandant of the Army War College, Major General Charles Ofoche commended participants for a robust and rewarding session, saying: “we all are instruments of the state, regardless of the color of the uniforms we wear.”
Other agencies represented were: Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian Immigration Service, Department of States Service, Nigerian Customs Service, Nigerian Prison Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Nigerian Civil Defence Corps.

Governor Seyi Makinde has banned the activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Oyo state, following the recent violence across Ibadan.

The government declared the activities of the union illegal with immediate effect and also announced the taking over of all parks and garages in the state, The Nation reports.
A statement signed by the governor which was read by his chief of staff, Bisi Ilaka, asked the people of the state to go about their lawful duties without fear of molestation.
The statement added that a combined security task force has been put in place in every community of the state for peace and order. The chief of staff disclosed this at the executive chamber of Makinde’s office, adding that the decision was reached after due consultation with security stakeholders and security chiefs in the state.
He said:
“While appreciating the good people of Oyo State for your steadfastness overtime and support for our administration, I want to reiterate our stand on the need to maintain peace and tranquillity in our state in order to engender commercial and human development.
“After today’s deliberation with Security stakeholders meeting involving security chiefs and Government, we have resolved to proscribe the National UniThe government declared the activities of the union illegal with immediate effect and also announced the taking over of all parks and garages in the state, The Nation reports.

A group which claimed to be loyal to the new governor said it will take over leadership of the union as soon as he comes into office.

Information Reaching us from Sahara Reports is that a cat and mouse game between security agents and members of the Islamic Movement Of Nigeria ( IMN ), is currently going in Abuja as Shiites have embarked on its planned massive protest in Abuja.

The protest which kicked off at the National Mosque on Friday despite the heavy security presence.
The security agents were stationed to barricade the perimeter of the mosque in the hope that it will disrupt the protest. 


Armed policemen who have been keeping vigil around the mosque got more than what they bargained for when a mammoth crowd of the members of the group disembarked from vehicles from different directions. 
The protesters were chanting anti-government songs calling President Muhammadu Buhari unprintable names.
The placard-carrying protesters who divided themselves into different groups are currently heading toward the popular Wuse Market where the flags of the United States of America (USA) and Israel will be burnt.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered that upcoming musician, Azeez Fashola, alias Naira Marley, be remanded in the prison custody.
The judge made the remand order on Monday morning shortly after the musician was arraigned before him on 11 counts, bordering on credit card fraud.
Naira Marley had pleaded not guilty to the cyber fraud charges pressed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. 
The judge adjourned till May 30 to take the bail application filed by the defence counsel, Taiwo Oreagba, on behalf of his client.

Mount Everest's melting glaciers uncover bodies of dead climbers

According to a new report, due to global warming melting glaciers on Mount Everest are revealing more and more bodies of dead climbers. Almost 300 lives have been lost to the frozen peaks of Everest since the first attempt to conquer the mountain in 1921. Recent expeditions to recover some bodies have sparked heated debate in the about the morality of risking more lives to retrieve bodies from one of the most unforgiving places on Earth.
6,613 pounds of trash -- more than 3 tons -- have been collected from Mount Everest since mid-April, with plenty more to go, according to recent reports.
Four dead bodies have also been located during the campaign to clean the mountain, which began on April 14 out of Nepal, according to The Himalayan Times. Officials expect they will remove a total of 11 tons of garbage by the end of the 45-day campaign period, USA Today reported on Thursday.
MELTING MOUNT EVEREST GLACIERS REVEAL DEAD CLIMBERS’ BODIES: REPORT
There are still about 30 tons of garbage on the mountain, ABC reported.
"Our goal is to extract as much waste as possible from Everest so as to restore glory to the mountain. Everest is not just the crown of the world, but our pride," Dandu Raj Ghimire, Nepal's tourism director, said according to The Hindu.
Nepal’s tourism department, local government, and other mountaineering groups are working together for the campaign, which is the first of its kind, The Himalayan Times reported.
"Everything on Everest, other than rock and snow, will be brought back," Tika Ram Gurung, secretary of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, said according to The Kathmandu Post. "The goal is to send the message that we should keep this mountain pollution-free."
According to ABC, 5,200 people have hiked to the top of Mount Everest with another 775 who are planning to try it this year. With those trips, people often leave things behind.

Because the trip is challenging, some people meet a more harrowing fate. Everest has claimed the lives of almost 300 climbers since the first attempt to conquer the mountain in 1921, two-thirds of whom are buried in the mountain’s ice and snow, the BBC reported earlier this year.
The outlet reported that, with global warming, those bodies are now being uncovered.
"Because of global warming, the ice sheet and glaciers are fast melting and the dead bodies that remained buried all these years are now becoming exposed," Ang Tshering Sherpa, former president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, told the news outlet.
The BBC also interviewed a government official who had retrieved about 10 dead bodies from the mountain in recent years who said that “clearly more and more of them are emerging now.”
In Alaska, North America’s tallest mountain, Denali, is also having a similar issue, only with human poop.
Last month, it was reported that Denali could be covered in 66 tons of poop as glaciers melt away in the coming decades and perhaps much sooner -- a process that's speeding up thanks to climate change.

An explosion rocked parts of an Illinois town Friday night, leaving four people injured and three others unaccounted for, authorities said.

The blast happened at AB Specialty Silicones in Waukegan, about 40 miles north of Chicago, police said. The company describes itself as a manufacturer of specialty silicone chemicals.
The "catastrophic explosion" hit around 9:30 p.m. local time, said Cmdr. Joe Florip, a Waukegan police spokesman.
Three employees are unaccounted for, Waukegan Fire Marshal Steven Lenzi said.
    Florip said he would "categorize this as a massive explosion."
    "Many neighboring properties are going to have damage," he said.
    The fire has been extinguished, and hazardous materials technicians and other teams are on the scene and searching, Lenzi said. No cause has been determined, and the state fire marshal will assist with an investigation, he said.
    Florip said the plant was open at the time of the explosion.
    Lenzi said everyone affected was an employee working at the time. Four were taken to area hospitals with moderate to serious injuries, officials said. Two others were seen but requested no treatment.
